[Week 2] Rotational Traverser - POC demonstration
This week we focused on getting the game further developed in terms of concept and puzzle ideas given that it is a puzzle and which actions we allow the player is a very important piece to build the rest of the game off of.
So far we have thought of a good implementation of how to incorporate a puzzle into a cell environment for the first stage. Lots of ideas brimming for the human scale, second stage; and then some unique ideas to go along with the planetary third stage.
For the proof-of-concept we wanted to showcase some of the main mechanics we wanted to utilize throughout the game. The POC takes place in the human stage where the player is able to rotate objects horizontally and vertically to complete puzzles. The puzzle shown off is a continuation from our recent game jam where we direct light through rotation to unlock the end of the level. On the top right we can see how many degrees of rotation the player is allowed. At the end of the puzzle, the reset key is pressed showing all of the rotatable objects slowly rotating back to their original states.
This level was put together quickly to show off the main concepts in the game. Though it goes to show a few important things that need to be kept in mind. Namely the intuitiveness of the level as it wasn't immediately obvious what had to be done, that the platforms would stay up, etc. As we put together more thoughtful levels and make the player movement more enjoyable (likely a greater POV to see what the rotations are affecting), we hope to make a more polished puzzle game.
Tim: Discussed level ideas and started a Trello board with the same on things we need to accomplish. In terms of coding, I mainly worked on the rotation script to add the additional features that we didn't have time for during the game jam in addition to making it more robust, and polished.
Daniel: Worked on camera control and player movement script.
Seel: Worked on planning out tasks on Trello board. Reimplemented light puzzle system to make it more extensible to support more complex puzzles in the future. Put together the puzzle for the POC level.
Michael: Developed a couple of levels for potential puzzles.
